How to care for your mohair or alpaca garment?
Mohair and alpaca are precious natural fibers, known for their softness, warmth, and lightness. Because they are delicate, they require gentle care to preserve their fluffy texture and shape.
Washing
- Hand wash in cold water, or machine wash on a very delicate wool cycle.
- Use a detergent specifically designed for wool and avoid cycles that are too long or too harsh.
- Occasional washing is sufficient: these fibers do not need to be washed frequently.
Drying
- Never wring out your garment. Gently press it to remove excess water.
- Lay your knit flat to dry on a clean towel, gently reshaping the sleeves and silhouette.
- Avoid hanging your garment, as this could distort it, and avoid any direct heat sources (radiators, sunlight).
- Keep in mind that the shape your garment takes while wet is the shape it will retain once dry.
Ironing
- Ironing is generally not necessary.
- If needed, use a very low heat setting with a damp cloth between the iron and the knit, without crushing the fibers.
Small steps that make a difference
Air out your knitwear between wears rather than washing it every time
Store it folded rather than on a hanger to prevent it from stretching
Use a lint shaver to maintain its appearance over time
Avoid repeated friction (from bags, belts) that can cause pilling
